About our Nursery
The Nursery provides a happy and gentle introduction to our youngest boys and provides 21 places for boys aged 3 to 4 years old. The Nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and is an integral part of the Pre-Prep.
The ethos in the Nursery is underpinned by respect and understanding for all the boys, as well as a commitment to the highest standards of education. We foster a love of learning and traits such as a positive self-image, confidence, independence and responsibility are highly valued and actively promoted. Our Nursery provides an inclusive, happy, caring and stimulating educational environment.
The curriculum is delivered through a combination of child led and adult led activities. Children learn through exciting and stimulating topics that incorporate the six areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. This programme encompasses personal, social and emotional development; communication, language and literacy; problem solving, reasoning and numeracy; knowledge and understanding of the world; creative; and physical development. The key principles which underpin the curriculum are the belief that each boy is unique; positive relationships are crucial; the provision is enabling; and that each area of learning and development is equally important. This forms the foundation of our curriculum.
Learning in the Nursery takes place through a topic/theme based approach alongside continuous provision in regular areas. A range of teaching styles are used throughout the year and will include individual, small group, large group and whole class. Structured situations with focus activities will be in operation, but there will also be times when there are more free flow activities. Nursery children use the outside area, weather permitting. Activities include the adventure playground, the early years garden, outdoor ride-on vehicles, sand, water, and investigative work.
There are three members of staff dedicated to working in the Nursery- a fully qualified teacher, a nursery nurse (NNEB) and a very experienced and qualified nursery assistant. The boys also have music lessons with a specialist Music teacher.
The structure of the Nursery day is as follows:-
Term 1: 8.45-11.45 Monday-Friday
Term 2: 8.45-3.00 Monday and Wednesday; 8.45-11.45 Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
Term 3: 8.45-3.00 Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 8.45-11.45 Tuesday and Thursday
The boys in the nursery automatically move into our Reception classes. Strong links between the classes ensure that the transition is smooth and happy, and many activities during the year are combined with the Reception year boys.
